### A short path, and the cheap end of it ends most of these

Sump, filter stack, pump, hose, and whatever the kitchen fitter connected at the sink. Two of those five are free to check and they close this call more often than any component. What the visit adds is order: the stack lifted out rather than rinsed in place, the impeller turned by hand, the hose followed to the wall, and the pump measured under load rather than condemned by the noise it makes fighting a jam. On this make the message describing all of it differs by generation — a printed number, a blink pattern, or a colon format on the terrace machine — and the model settles which you are reading.

What this involves

Filter stack first — it is free, and it ends this call more often than a pump does

Drain hose and the air gap at the sink, which are somebody else's install

The pump proved on a meter before it is replaced, not diagnosed by elimination

Lift and clear the filter stack

Coarse filter, fine filter and the plate under them, rinsed and reseated properly. A filter put back a quarter-turn out is the reason for a good share of the leaks we see after somebody else has been.

Follow the water out of the machine

Sump, pump impeller, hose run and the air gap or disposal branch at the sink. On a kitchen island the hose has usually been routed by a joiner rather than by a fitter.

Prove the pump and re-run a full program

Resistance and current at the pump rather than a guess from the noise, then a complete cycle watched to the end so the drain is proved under real load.

### It drains sometimes and not others.

A partial blockage rather than a dead pump: a short program moves little enough water to get away with it. Mention that when you call, because it points at the filter and the hose and it changes what we bring.

### Could the sink be the problem?

Frequently. An air gap silted up, or a disposer whose knockout plug was never punched out at installation, will drain a dishwasher slowly for a year before it stops altogether. We check it, and we say when the appliance is innocent.
