### What to do in the next ten minutes

Open the door as soon as the program ends and put a hand near the top basket. Hot means the heater worked and the question is condensation; cool means it did not. Look at the rinse aid reservoir and fill it where it is low. Then run one more load and leave the door ajar for ten minutes at the end — if that dries it, the machine is working and the cycle it was given is the problem.

### How these machines dry

There is no blower on most of them. The load is heated during the final rinse and the moisture then condenses on the cooler steel of the tub and runs down — which is why a stainless interior dries better than a plastic one, and why opening the door at the end helps so much. The turbo drying models add a fan to move that damp air, and on those the fan is a separate part with its own failure.

### Why we check the water temperature rather than the dishes

A load can feel warm and still have run several degrees below what the program called for, and a few degrees is the difference between drying and not. So the measurement that decides this is taken in the machine during the wash phase, not on a plate afterwards. That one reading is the reason a drying visit does not turn into a heater replaced on suspicion.

The rinse aid is empty or set too low

Rinse aid makes water sheet off instead of beading, and beads are what remain. Costs nothing to look at, so look there before anything else.

The heater or its sensor has failed

Cold dishes and a long cycle together mean the machine never reached temperature. On the display generations there is usually a heating message with it.

The drying fan has stopped

Only on the models fitted with one. The load comes out hot and wet, which is exactly the pattern that points here rather than at the heater.

Are the dishes hot?

One second of attention, and worth more than anything else you can tell us: it divides a heating repair from a drying one before the van leaves.

How long did the program run?

A cycle that has quietly grown by an hour is a heating problem announcing itself as a timing one, because the machine waits for temperature before it moves on.

Is it only the plastics?

Plastic holds no heat, so it dries last in any dishwasher. Where the china and the glassware come out dry and only the tubs are damp, nothing has gone wrong.

### Would a hotter program fix it?

Sometimes, and it is worth trying before anybody is called. An eco program runs cooler by design and dries less well; that is the trade it was built for.

### Is the fan worth repairing?

On a turbo drying model, yes — it is an ordinary part and the machine loses much of its point without it.
