- “Drain the machine before anything else — a locked door with water in it is correct”
- “Do not force it: the lock is the failed part and forcing adds the handle”
- “Some models release after a full power-off of several minutes”
Symptom
Asko washer door will not open
A finished program and a door that will not release, usually with a drum that still has water in it. Those two facts are connected: the lock stays engaged while there is water inside, which is the machine protecting the room rather than a failure. So the sequence that works is drain first, open second. Where the drum is genuinely empty and the door still will not release, the lock itself has failed — and on this make the premium panels say so in words while the numbered ones give a short code from whichever family that model belongs to.

Three ordinary causes
What this usually turns out to be
Cheapest and commonest first, which is also the order we check them in. They sit hundreds of dollars apart, and only the unit settles which one is yours.
-
There is still water in the drum
By far the most common reason, and not a failure at all. The lock is interlocked with level for the same reason spin is.
Washer not draining repair from $155 -
The door lock has failed shut
The mechanism no longer releases even with the drum empty and the power cycled. It is an ordinary part and the machine is not usable until it is changed.
Washer not spinning repair from $165 -
The door has dropped on its hinge
The latch is binding rather than the lock failing. It usually gets stiff for weeks first, which is the warning nobody acts on.

In five minutes
Before you call anybody
None of it needs tools, and all of it makes the visit shorter.
-
01
Is there water in the drum?
Look through the glass. If there is, this is a drainage question and not a lock one.
-
02
Have you tried a full power-off?
Five minutes at the wall, not a quick flick. A surprising share of locks release on that.
-
03
Has the door been stiff lately?
A latch that has needed a firmer push for a while has been telling you this was coming.
How it shows up
What people describe when they call
Two shortcuts
Narrow it down before anybody arrives
A description of the behaviour leaves a few possible causes. A code names the subsystem, and the model number says which parts to bring. Either one shortens the visit; both together usually settle it.

About Asko washer door will not open
What to do in the next ten minutes
Run a drain or spin-only program and let it finish — most doors release the moment the drum is empty. If there is no power to do that, empty it through the small drain hose behind the lower panel. Then switch the machine off at the wall for five full minutes and back on; many locks release on that alone. If the drum is empty and the door still holds, stop there.
Why there is no emergency handle
Some front loaders have a release cable behind the lower panel and some do not, and on the ones that do it is intended for a drained machine. Pulling a release on a full drum empties it onto the floor, which is exactly what the interlock exists to prevent. So the honest advice on this make is to drain first and pull nothing — and if the machine has no power at all, to empty it through the hose before anybody goes looking for a cable.
What levering it open costs
A lock is an inexpensive component. A door, its hinge and the handle are not, and a door levered open takes all three with it about half the time. It is the one place on a washing machine where waiting a day is straightforwardly cheaper than acting, and we say so even though it is not what anybody wants to hear with a load of wet washing inside.

Before you book
Questions about Asko washer door will not open
The washing has been in there two days.
Rewash it rather than dry it — two days at room temperature in this climate is enough to need it. The machine itself is unharmed.
Will the lock fail again?
Not usually. These fail from cycles and age rather than from a design problem, and a new one on a machine with years left in it is a proper repair.
