Is an Asko Washer Worth Repairing? The Arithmetic, Honestly

None of those is a hard decision on a machine with years left in it. They are parts and an afternoon, and on a steel-framed washer the rest of the machine is generally sound around them.
The one that is a decision
A drum bearing is from $395, and the figure is honest about what it is: a day's strip-down. The machine comes apart to reach the bearing and goes back together afterwards.
On most makes, a bearing at ten years is where the sensible advice is to replace the machine. On this one it frequently is not, and the reason is specific rather than loyal: these are built around a steel frame to a twenty-year test, so at ten or twelve years the frame, the drum, the motor and the electronics are usually still good. What has worn is one component in the middle of a machine that has not.
How the decision is actually made
Three things, checked before anything is quoted:
The frame and drum. Sound, or showing corrosion and wear that says the machine is closer to the end than the bearing suggests.
What else is worn. Seal, shocks, springs — they are all accessible during the job and renewing them together is a fraction of what it costs to do them separately. If all of them are due, the total is a different conversation.
The electronics. A board that has already been replaced once, or a control giving intermittent trouble, changes the arithmetic considerably.
What we say when the answer is no
That it is a no, before starting. You have then paid a diagnostic for a measured answer rather than a day's labor on a machine that was finished — which is the whole point of charging for the diagnosis rather than giving it away and recovering it on the repair.

Shock absorbers, from $165. Worn damping lets the drum travel further on every spin, and that travel is what takes the bearing out early. Nothing on the panel reports it; the test is pushing the drum and watching whether it settles or bounces. On a machine you intend to keep, it is the cheapest protection available.

Shock absorbers wear gradually, and as they go the drum is allowed to move further on every spin — which loads the bearing, unbalances the machine and eventually walks it across the floor. Because it is a strip-down rather than a part swap: the machine comes apart to reach it and goes back together afterwards, and that takes the day. It is priced as a day rather than discovered halfway through one, which is the only fair way to quote it.
