Keeping an Asko for Twenty Years: What It Actually Takes

The twenty-year figure is a test standard, not a promise. What decides whether a particular machine gets near it is short, dull and cheap.

Four things, and none of them is a repair

Filters. The dishwasher's stack — the whole stack, not just the top cylinder. The dryer's condenser, behind the plinth, washed until the water runs clear. The washer's pump filter, behind the lower panel. In this climate all three load faster than the manuals assume, because the machines are moving more moisture and more of it stays in the room.

Seals. The washer's door bellows, checked along its whole length with a hand rather than glanced at. Grit collects in the bottom fold and cuts from the inside, so the failure begins months before anything reaches the floor. On the refrigeration, the door gasket checked with a note of paper closed at intervals all round.

Hoses. Replaced at ten years whether or not they leak. It is the one component whose failure mode is sudden, and behind a machine nobody moves it perishes out of sight.

Damping. Push the washer's drum down and let go. It should settle at once. A drum that bounces has lost its shock absorbers, and worn damping loads the drum bearing on every spin.

Why that last one is the whole argument

Shock absorbers are an afternoon and a set of parts. A drum bearing is a day's strip-down. The first prevents the second, nothing on the panel reports it, and the only test is the one in the paragraph above.

That gap — between the cheap thing done on time and the expensive thing done late — is where most of the cost of owning any washing machine actually lives.

The measurement that ties it together

Time a standard dryer load, start to finish, twice a year, and write it on a card inside the closet door. Cycle length is the earliest warning these machines give and it only means something if somebody recorded the previous number.

Ninety minutes drifting to a hundred and twenty is not age. It is airflow, and airflow is filters.

What a yearly visit is for

The parts you cannot reach. Lint inside the dryer cabinet, around the fan and against the heat exchanger, where no owner check goes and no code exists. The condenser washed rather than tapped out. The shock absorbers assessed properly. The dishwasher's water hardness set from an actual reading of the supply rather than left on the factory number.

One visit covers every Asko appliance in the property, because the journey is paid once.

And on a terrace or a barrier island

Add salt. Hinges, fasteners, latches and backdraft dampers corrode years before anything electrical does, and every one of them is cheap while it still moves.
